They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1878 and settled in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland. They were there a short time before moving south to N. Dakota. In 1882, Gísli’s mother, Þórunn Björnsdóttir came there with his siblings, Katrín, Sigurður and Þórður. After Guðrún died, Gísli moved to Winnipeg, remarried and got a job at a railway in Saskatchewan. They were there for some years, and settled on land in the Þingvalla Settlement in 1891, not far from Churchbridge, but did not live there long. They moved to Selkirk where Gísli’s mother and brother Sigurður lived. In 1907, they moved back to Saskatchewan and took land in 1910 on the Turtle River not far from the village of Mervin, a far distance northwest of Saskatoon. They lived there for ten years before moving again within the province, now to Cleeves, further north. The couple last moved to Saskatoon around 1923.
