Halldór Briem was born at Espihól in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on September 5, 1852. He died in Iceland on June 29, 1929.

Halldór was a tour guide and led a large group of Icelanders to New Iceland in 1876. There he edited Framfari until 1880, when he was ordained as a pastor by Rev. Jón Bjarnason and worked as a pastor in Manitoba that year, but then took a call from the Icelandic congregations in Minnesota. He got a teaching position in Iceland and moved back to Iceland in 1882.
