Hóseas was the son of Þorlákur Bergvinsson and Vilborg Vilhjálmsdóttir. Vilborg’s sister Soffía emigrated west to Minnesota in 1885. Hóseas came west alone in 1883. Little is known about his travels, but he had probably been in contact with Soffía, his aunt and her family. Sources in Minnesota do not mention him there, but Jóhannes and Soffía followed their son Gunnar west to Marietta, Washington about the turn of the century. Hóseas is registered there with their son Vilhjálmur in Whatcom county in 1930.
