Jón Jónsson came west to N. Dakota in 1881 with his mother, Helga Eyvindsdóttir, and her husband, Helgi Guðmundsson. They settled in Pembina County, but in 1886, Jón and Helgi went on an expedition west to the Mouse River. They found available land and decided to settle there. Jón bought land and he and Ingibjörg lived there until 1936. They then sold that land and bought acreage north of Upham.
