Elísabet was born at Hákonarstaðir in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, the daughter of the couple Gunnlaugur Pétursson and Guðbjargar Jónsdóttir. Halldór came west to Minnesota in 1879 with his parents, Eyjólfur Nikulásson and Þorbjörg Jósepsdóttir. They settled in Lyon County where Halldór grew up and began farming with Elísabet. In 1909, they moved to Hákonarstaðir in Yellow Medicine County, which was the oldest farm of an Icelander in Minnesota; Kristín’s father, Gunnlaugur Pétursson, settled there in 1875.
