Sigbjörn came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1904 with three of his children, Ólöf had emigrated west in 1902 and Jóhann Kristján in 1903. They lived there a few years, then the father and son moved in 1908 to the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan and bought land near Leslie. Coming west with them were Jóhanna, Sigbjörn’s 54 year-old sister, and adopted child, Jóhanna Björnsdóttir.
