Eiríkur came west to Winnipeg in 1887 and took land north of the Hóla Settlement in Manitoba. He did not own a farm, but worked for farmers. He went in search of gold in the Klondyke shortly before 1900, but returned to Hóla. He moved from the settlement and went west to Saskatchewan and worked in the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement). Þorbjörg also came west to Winnipeg in 1887 with her mother, Guðný Andrésdóttir, and her husband, Jón Sveinbjarnarson.
