Jóhann came west in 1903 with his parents, Hálfdán Guðmundsson and Jarþrúður Andrésdóttir. They settled on land near Minneota where Jóhann lived the rest of his life. There is little known about Mary, a source (Well Connected) in Minnesota says she was Arnason or Gudmundson and came to Minnesota in 1910, probably from Canada. She may have had a son, Karl or Carl. In the Minnesota Census of 1930, the couple lived in Lyon County, 55 years old and 51 years old.
