Benedikt emigrated west in 1903 with his parents, Björn Sigurðsson and Guðrún Hallgrímsdóttir. They settled in the Argyle Settlement. Karólína came west the same year with her parents, Kristján Sigurðsson and Árnína Þorláksdóttir. They settled in the Hóla Settlement in Manitoba. Benedikt was a farmer there for 11 years, then became a driver in Glenboro for 19 years, but then moved to Winnipeg. There he was the superintendent of the First Lutheran Church of the Iceland congregation in the city.
