Spouse: 1) April 4, 1904 Matthildur Guðný Jónsdóttir b. in Minnesota before 1880, d. December 29, 1912. She had the last name Westdal. 2) Þóra Margrét Björnsdóttir b. October 6, 1891, d. in Lundar, Manitoba on December 28, 1974. She took the name Thora Margret Benedictson in the west.

Stefán grew up in Lyon County in Minnesota with his parents, Sigbjörn Sigurðsson and Steinunn Bjarnadóttir. There he started farming on his own land which he named Reynivellir. After Matthildur’s death, Stefán moved to Big Point west of Lake Manitoba and later lived at Beaver Dam in Manitoba. Þóra was the daughter of Björn Benediktsson and Sigríður Jakobína Jónsdóttir. In 1942, Stefán and Þóra moved to Lundar.
