Þórdís was the daughter of Snorri Jónsson of Papey and Kristbjorg Helgadóttir. She lived with her mother in Reykjavík in 1880 but seems to have come west before 1890. Jóhann came west in 1878 with his cousin and foster brother, Jósef Jósefsson, and first lived with him in Minnesota, although his parents, Vigfús Jósefsson and Sigurborg Hjálmarsdóttir came west the same year. . Vigfús lived in Limestone Township, but Jósef took land in Westerheim Township. Jóhann became a successful farmer, prospered well, and cared for the community in various ways.
