Sesselja was born in the same county in Minnesota, the daughter of Guðmundur Gottskálksson and Ingibjörg Magnúsardóttir. Guðmundur was the son of Gottskálks Þorkelsson and Sesselja Gottskálksdóttir who had come west in 1883.
