Daníel came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with his mother, Aldís Jónasdóttir, and his sister, Hlaðgerður. They were the children of Grímur Laxdal in Akureyri. They settled in New Iceland but moved from there to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1880. Daníel was a promising child and an active teenager. Surely his mother was aware of future possibilities and realized that a good command of English was the key to North American society. He was so fortunate to receive preparatory education from his uncle, Reverend Friðrik Bergmann, who encouraged him to pursue postgraduate studies. He graduated in law from Decorah, Iowa, and worked as a lawyer in Cavalier, N. Dakota.
