María Grímsdóttir Laxdal was born on October 14, 1891 in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. She died in White Rock, British Columbia on June 3, 1972.

María was the daughter of Grímur Laxdal and Sveinbjörg Torfadóttir. Sveinn emigrated west to Winnipeg in 1904 with his parents, Eiríkur Björnsson and Aðalbjörg Jónsdóttir. They lived in the city and Sveinn graduated there with a degree in medicine in the spring of 1916. He practiced medicine in Gimli and other places in Manitoba until 1954. The couple went west to the Pacific in their later years.
