Eriksdale

Vesturfarar

Eriksdale is a small town north of Lundar and east of Lake Manitoba. Swedish settlers were the first to settle there in 1905. They traveled by train from Winnipeg to Oak Point and walked or used horse-drawn wagons to reach their destination. The town is named after a Swedish man, Jonas Erikson, who first settled there. Land was available there at a good price, but those who bought and began settlement soon realized that the land was rocky and wet. Those who persevered gradually realized that the land offered many things, there was a variety of game, plenty of fish in rivers and lakes, various types of berries grew well, plenty of fresh water, and good building materials where trees grew well. The location of the village that was formed is on the main travel route. To the north, settlers were settling on the east side of Lake Manitoba, in the south Icelandic settlers settled on Swan Lake (Álftavatn), and to the east the settlement grew west from the Árdals-Framnes Settlement. Roads were built and transportation improved.
