Jón was the son of Arngrímur Jónsson and Jóhanna Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1876. They moved from Canada south to Wisconsin and then west to Lincoln County in Minnesota, and there was Jón born, the first Icelandic child born in Minnesota.  Björg came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893 with her brother, Guðmundur. They came to Minnesota where they had relatives, among them was Gunnlaugur Pétursson from Hákonarstaðir, the first Icelandic settler in Minnesota.  Jón and Björg first lived in Lincoln County, but in 1918 they settled on land south of Minneota in Lyon County.
