Egill came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923 with his mother, Jakobína Björnsdóttir, and his sister, Bjarney. They lived in Winnipeg where Egill received his education. He studied theology at Maywood Seminary in Illinois and served congregations in Glenboro and the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba 1930-1945, and in N. Dakota from 1945 until his death. Ellen was the daughter of Guðmundur Jónsson of Dalasýsla and his wife Guðbjörg Helgadóttir from Ferjubakka in Borgarfjörður. They lived in the Mouse River Settlement in N. Dakota.
