Guðbjörg came west alone by sea in 1882 as her parents had come west a year earlier. Guðmundur came west to Kinmount, Ontario with his mother, stepfather, and siblings in 1874. They lived there until the spring of 1875 when they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they lived for some time. The family then moved to Elk Rapids, Michigan where Helgi Guðmundsson had come with his family. Helgi’s wife was the sister of  Guðmundur’s mother, Sigríður. The families moved together to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota in 1884, but the settlements had grown and Helgi Guðmundsson did not fare well there. He and Guðmundur went west to the Mouse River Settlement to explore the lands there, and Helgi bought land for himself and his family. Guðmundur and family joined them a year later, or in the spring of 1887, and lived there the rest of their lives.
