He came west to Manitoba in 1893 with his parents, Þorlákur Jónasson and Kristrún Pétursdóttir. They settled in the Argyle Settlement. Benedikt moved north in 1908 to Moosehorn Bay on Lake Manitoba with his brother, Björn, and they bought land there. Benedikt worked in many areas of Manitoba, as well as Saskatchewan.
