Kristján grew up in the Icelandic community in Lyon County. As a young man, he got a job in the town of Marshall with an electrician, but considered himself a musician, playing the coronet. He and his brother Ólafur rented a house together in Marshall in 1920, but shortly afterwards Kristján moved to California.
