Sigurður came west in 1878 with his parents, Gunnlaugur Magnússon and Guðfinna Vilhjálmsdóttir. They settled in Swede Prairie Township in Yellow Medicine County. Kristjana came west in the same year with her parents, Sigbjörn Sigurðsson and Steinunn Magnúsdóttir, who settled in Westerheim Township near Minneota, Minnesota. Sigurður and Kristjana lived in Yellow Medicine County, then moved to Montevideo, and later to Minneapolis.
