Ragnar came west to Winnipeg in 1920, where he studied piano. He worked in music and joined the United States Army during World War II. Was sent to Iceland in 1942 and lived in Reykjavík until 1945. A mixed choir in Reykjavík at that time caught Ragnar´s attention , most of the singers came from S. Þingeyjarsýsla and among them was Sigríður Jónsdóttir. When she and Ragnar came west, they settled in Garðar, N. Dakota.
