Ósk Guðný was just months old when she came west with her parents, Pálmi Lárusson and Guðrún Steinsdóttir, in 1893. They moved to New Iceland, living in Gimli and Riverton. Skúli grew up in Húsavík, south of Gimli, Manitoba. He was the son of Magnús Hjörleifsson and Guðný Halldórsdóttir who also came west in 1893. Skúli went to school and studied accounting and made a career of it. Ósk moved from Riverton in 1939 and settled in Winnipeg. She lived there with her elderly father and brother, Hjálmar Valdimar Lárusson, who later taught in the Department of Icelandic at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
