Jón was ordained a priest/pastor in Iceland in 1886, where he served various congregations, but moved west to Winnipeg in Manitoba before the turn of the century and settled in the Lundar Settlement. The family lived there all the time. He formed a congregation in the settlement and started a Sunday School. However, he never served as pastor of the Icelandic church, Reverend Runólfur Marteinsson was appointed pastor of the congregation.
