Sigurður was born in the Icelandic community in Minnesota and lived there with his parents, Eiríkur Jónsson and Vilborg Stefánsdóttir. He moved with them north to Arborg, Manitoba in 1901 where he worked at whatever he could, but then joined the C. N. R Canadian Railway and was a mechanic. On one trip across the Canadian plains, he was killed in a railroad accident.
