Hildur Jónína was the daughter of Sigfúsar Jónsson and Guðrún Hildibrandsdóttir who came west to Manitoba in 1876. She lived with them in New Iceland. Jón grew up in the home of his parents Eiríkur Jónsson and Vilborg Stefánsdóttir in Minneota, Minnesota. From there, the family moved to Duluth and later to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. In 1901, the family moved to Canada and bought land near Arborg, Manitoba. Jón farmed there and lived the rest of his life there.
