Bernharður Jónsson was born at Mosfellssveit in Kjósarsýsla in 1857. He took the name Bernhard Johnson in the west. He died in Saskatchewan in 1910.

Bernharð came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and moved onward from there to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan where he was one of the first settlers. Valgerður came west with the family of Eirík Ingimundarson in 1887 where she worked as their housekeeper. Bernharður and Valgerður moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1896 and were among the first settlers near Foam Lake.
