Guðrún came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887, the daughter of Reverend Magnús Thorlacius and Guðrún Jónasdóttir. Friðrik had come west to Wisconsin in the United States in 1875 and spent the first year with Reverend Páll Þorláksson. He enrolled in the Norwegian Latin School in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated in 1881. He then studied theology in Norway in 1883 -1885, enrolled in the theology department of Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia in the fall of 1885, and graduated in 1886. He was ordained as a pastor on June 17 of that year and received a call from Icelandic congregations the settlements in N. Dakota. He stepped down as a pastor in N. Dakota in 1902 and moved to Winnipeg, where he served for the rest of his life.
