Gunnar was the son of Þórður Eiríksson and Sesselja Einarsdóttir. He had a brother, Elís, who was 10 years older than he. Elís married Kristín Soffía Sigfúsdóttir and they had a daughter, Vilhelmína. Elís died and Kristín Soffía was then a widow with her 2 daughters in 1901. Gunnar came west in 1911 and with him Vilhelmína Elísdóttir, his registered foster daughter. Gunnar lived the rest of his life in the Hnausa Settlement.
