Vilhelmína was the daughter of Elís Þórðarson and his wife Kristín Soffía Sigfúsdóttir. Her father died when she was a child at the turn of the century, because in 1901 her mother is registered as a widow with two daughters. Gunnar was the son of Þórður Eiríksson and Sesselja Einarsdóttir. Elís, Vilhelmína’s father, was Gunnar’s brother. It is not clear when Gunnar took Vilhelmína into foster care, but she came west with him to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1911. Gunnar lived the rest of his life in the Hnausa Settlement.
