Gísli traveled with Petrína Jónsdóttir to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 who was the fiancé of Stefán Ólafsson, his good friend, who had come west in 1879. He lived with them in Winnipeg until the turn of the century and with them in the Lundar Settlement. He worked as a hired hand for Stefán all the time.
