Vilhjálmur and his father, Grímur Snjólfsson, came west together to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893. Gísli, Vilhjálmur’s brother, met them there, as he had come west in 1888. Stefán Ólafsson, Gísli’s friend, had opened a dairy store on Toronto Street and had a few cows that Gísli cared for. The new arrivals lived with Gísli, but soon Vilhjálmur started working for the city.
