They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and settled in Selkirk. Lake Winnipeg fascinated Jóhann and they moved north to Mikley in 1889 and from there to the Ísafoldar Settlement in 1891. They lived there until 1897, but then Lake Winnipeg floods drove them off their land and they went back to Mikley. Friðrika hired herself to work on various farms on the island, but Jóhann kept their land. In 1929 they moved together to Selkirk and lived there with their daughter, Sigríður for their last few years.
