Sigurrós Tómasdóttir was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on December 27, 1882.

Sigurrós came west to N. Dakota in 1888 with her parents, Tómas Jóhannsson and Guðrún Árnadóttir. Þórður came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1889 with his brother Sveinn. Þórður got a job with a Canadian farmer east of the city. He worked there for two years and learned English as well as various aspects of agriculture. He also did some railway work but then they went south to N. Dakota where Sveinn worked as a teacher.
When their parents moved west in 1892, Þórður went to visit them. His father Árni moved north to Brown, Manitoba in 1899 and Þórður went there in 1902 and bought land. He sold it in 1906 and moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He took land near the town of Mozart.
