Guðmundur Jónsson was born on May 8, 1882 in S. Múlasýsla. He died on March 11, 1959. He took the last name Austfjord in the west.

Guðmundur came west with his mother, Guðrún Björg Guðmundsdóttir, and Margrét Sigurjónsdóttir, the 8 year-old daughter of Guðmundur’s brother, Sigurjón Jónsson. They moved to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota the first year, but moved in 1904 to New Iceland and lived for awhile in the Hnausa Settlement. From there, the road led to Grund in the Geysir Settlement and they lived in Arborg until 1914, but then moved to Mikley (Hecla) after a number of years. They moved to Selkirk in 1918 and ended up at Skógum in Mikley (Hecla) in 1927.
