Jóhannes learned goldsmithing in Reykjavík, moved to Copenhagen, and then moved to North Dakota in 1886. He worked in both the US and in Canada, and moved to Pine Valley in the fall of 1897. He moved to Raymond, Washington with his family in 1905.
