Jón came west in 1887 with his parents, Ríkharður Jóhannsson and Herborg Sigurðardóttir in 1887. They bought land a short distance from Minneota, Minnesota. Jón and Ingiríður bought land in western Minnesota and lived there the rest of their lives.
