They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba at the turn of the 20th century, probably after 1901 because they are found in the 1901 census. A Canadian source (WtW) says they arrived in August 1902.They were in Winnipeg for a few months, but then moved to the Lundar Settlement in 1903 and lived there. Ólafur studied shoemaking in Iceland and may have taken up that occupation in the area. Ólöf was the daughter of Ívar Jónathansson and his wife Anna Bjarnadóttir.
