Magnús Stefánsson was born in the Westmann Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) on February 25, 1872. He died in 1907 in Manitoba. He took the last name Thorlakson in the west.

Magnús’ parents, Stefán Jóhannes Þorláksson and Jóhanna Magnúsdóttir, came west with the children in 1887 and 1888. Stefán came in 1887 and Jóhanna and the children a year later. The parish register in Eyjafjörður says that Magnús went west with his mother from Seyðisfjörður, but he is not registered on the same ship; not sure what year he went. Moníka was the daughter of Einar Jónsson, who took the last name Sudfjord in the west. Moníka came west to Manitoba with her parents in 1883. They later lived in Saskatchewan. Magnús and Moníka lived in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan. He drowned in Lake Winnipeg in 1907.
