Guðfinna came west to Canada in 1886 with her parents, Tómas Ingimundarson and Guðrún Eyjólfsdóttir. Jón came west across the sea in 1886 to Winnipeg, Manitoba and, after a short stay there, he continued west and settled in the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan. There he married Guðfinna. Jón and Guðfinna started farming in the Þingvalla Settlement and lived there for five years. They moved to Big Point in 1894. Jón was a large farmer in the district. He took land and then bought more and was engaged in both large-scale farming and cattle breeding. He also built a large, high-quality residential building with all the amenities such as central heating and electricity.

Jón was one of the pillars of the settlement. He turned out to be very generous and charitable when it came to social issues.
