They settled on a plateau in Paraná state, where Þorkell grew up with his mother and siblings, but lost his father in 1880. His first wife was the daughter of the owner of a sawmill, and Þorkell worked there with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. Þorkell prospered and lived well and long.
