Málmfríður came with her parents, Jón Björnsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir, west to New Iceland in 1876. Bergur was the son of Davíð Guðmundsson and Margrét Ingjaldsdóttir who came to New Iceland in 1876 from Skagafjörður. Davíð and Jón both moved to N. Dakota in 1881. Bergur and Málmfríður settled in the Lakes Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1906, although Bergur had taken the land in 1904.
