Bergur was the son of Davíð Guðmundsson and Margrét Ingjaldsdóttir who came to New Iceland in 1876 from Skagafjörður. Málmfríður came with her parents, Jón Björnsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir, west to New Iceland in 1876. Davíð and Jón both moved the families to N. Dakota in 1881. Bergur and Málmfríður took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906 but Bergur had taken land in 1904.
