Jón was the son of Einar Jónsson at Vestdalseyri in Seyðisfjörð. They moved from Iceland in the fall of 1888 to Norway and then to Scotland. They were married in Winnipeg in 1889 and lived there for a short time before moving to the Grunnavatn Settlement, which later became part of the Lundar Settlement.
