Jón was the son of Einar Jónsson at Vestdalseyri in Seyðisfjörð. They moved from Iceland in the fall of 1888 to Norway. They moved from there to Scotland and finally on to Canada. They were married in Winnipeg in 1889 and lived there for a while before settling in the Grunnavatn Settlement, which later became part of the Lundar Settlement.
