Sigurður was the son of Sigbjörn Sigurðsson and Þuríður Benediktsdóttir, early Icelandic settlers in Minnesota in 1879. Magnína was the daughter of Jón Vigfússon and Kristbjörg Kolbeinsdóttir who came west in 1879 and settled in Lyon County near Minneota. Magnína and Sigurður moved to N. Dakota and ran a farm in Longfellow Township in McLean County in 1910. Sigurður was still living there in 1920, a widower with five young children.
