They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and Stefán worked there in a grain mill. They moved to New Iceland and settled in the Fljóts Settlement. Stefán liked the grassy land north of the village (later Riverton) and settled there. He was thus the first settler in a new settlement, Ísafold, and started farming. They persevered until the turn of the century, but floods in Lake Winnipeg drove settlers off their lands, including Stefán. He managed to sell his land and the couple moved from there to Selkirk where their son Jóhann lived. He moved west to Kandahar in Saskatchewan in 1905, but Stefán and Ingibjörg lived in Selkirk until 1913, then they made their way to Kandahar. After Stefán’s death, Ingibjörg moved in with her son Magnús, who lived in Selkirk.
