Guðmundur and Guðný came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888. They settled in the Lundar Settlement and began farming near Álftá and were dairy farmers. One day in September, 1896, Guðmundur was herding the cows and had to wade an icy river and got wet. He worked in wet clothes for a long day, went to bed late at night, got pneumonia and died. Guðný was pregnant when this happened and gave birth to her son Guðmundur in early 1897. She was forced to leave the farm, and place her two sons, Bjarni and Guðmundur, in foster homes. She took her other sons with her to her brother who lived in Langruth.
