Valgerður Stefánsdóttir was born in 1852 in Dalasýsla. She died in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1926. She took the last name Gillis in the west.

They came west to Winnipeg in 1887 and settled in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland. Their stay was short, they moved to Selkirk and lived there a few years. In 1892, they settled in Duluth, Minnesota where they lived until 1902. From there, they moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota and there Valgerður is listed as a widow in 1910, so Jóhannes must have died before then. She lived in the community until her death.
