Jakob Gísli Jóhannesson was born on July 10, 1878 in Húnavatnssýsla. He died in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1969. He took the last name Gillis in the west.
Spouse: May 24, 1914 in Garðar: Þórunn Jónsdóttir Bergman b. November 19, 1893 in Garðar, N. Dakota, d. 1953 in Vatnabyggð. She took the name Thorunn (Tota) Gillis with marriage.

Jakob came west to Winnipeg in 1887 with his parents, Jóhannes Gíslason and Valgerður Stefánsdóttir, who lived in the community until 1892. Jakob moved with them to Duluth, Minnesota and was there until the turn of the century. The family moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota, but Jakob moved to British Columbia and worked in railroad construction. After a few years, he moved to Garðar, N. Dakota where he met Þórunn. She was born in the community, the daughter of Jón Sigfússon Bergman and Sigurbjörg Davíðsdóttir. They settled on their own land in the Lakes Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1921 and lived there the rest of their lives.
